All I want for Christmas is you! 8 Grails I want to unveil this year
Christmas is coming, literally. It’s only a few weeks before the big guy from the north pulls on his red outfit, dressed and booted for one of the busiest nights of his life. Christmas just isn’t Christmas without an extravagant, perversely ridiculous, and extraordinarily ostentatious wishlist letter sent to Santa himself. So, I went to rummage through the vaults in the e-commerce space and found 8 watches that, if asked in said letter nicely enough, I will unwrap on Christmas morning. Enjoy!
Breguet Double Tourbillon 5347BR
This fine watchmaking monster is coming to retail in 6-figure territory. the Breguet The Double Tourbillon 5347BR is iconic, it’s full of charisma, and it just so happens that it doesn’t have one but two of my favorite complications. Like a super luxurious Christmas ornament (not that you would want to hang this 676-component solid rose gold beast on your Christmas tree), the Breguet Double Tourbillon 5347BR is a glittering and sparkling exclusivity piece that would be the most epic of gifts. Christmas epic. Santa, I hope you are reading this!
Patek Philippe 5980 / 1R Nautilus Chronograph
Like the Breguet Double Tourbillon 5347BR, the Patek Philippe 5980 / 1R Nautilus Chronograph is a heavyweight in the world of fine watchmaking. Hailed as being as bulky as it is beautiful, the Patek Philippe 5980 / 1R Nautilus Chronograph is a no-brainer on the Grail Christmas gift list. Dressed entirely in rose gold, the Patek Philippe 5980 / 1R Nautilus Chronograph is undeniably breathtaking and truly takes the cake for over-the-top horology. I wonder if this will tear a hole in the bottom of my Christmas stocking, though …
Patek Philippe 5131 / 1P World Time
The combination of the platinum case and bracelet with the cloisonne enamel dial depicting the world map lays the foundation for what is one of the most striking world time watches on the market. The Patek Philippe 5131 / 1P World Time actually features a North Pole perspective map, a good reason to have it on this Christmas wishlist! The Patek Philippe World Time 5131 / 1P is a remarkable watch that allows its wearer to read the time in 24 different time zones, while having a day / night indicator for each of these time zones. I wouldn’t hate the idea of unboxing this December 25th.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak perpetual calendar
I’m gonna come out on a branch here and say a solid gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is going to be on almost everyone’s Christmas wish list. But, in the interest of Christmas and to do it all, I thought I would go one step further and add a solid gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak perpetual calendar to the list. I mean, the joyous occasion of Christmas should be fully used. Wait, that sounded pompous and came out all wrong. And maybe I’m asking for too much, but what’s a little Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in solid gold for the big guy from the north?
Patek Philippe 5712 Nautilus
Ok, now if I had to choose from all of these parts, then the 5712 would be my choice. Of course, it isn’t clad in exotic metal, nor a super complicated movement, but what it does have is functionality, portability, impeccable aesthetics, and movement that is just perfection. The Patek Philippe 5712 Nautilus is, of course, one of the most sought-after steel watches in the world, and for good reason: it is simply amazing. But I know Santa has enough pull and knows about the right people to sort me out. Thank you in advance.
Rolex Daytona 116506 ‘Platona’ watch
The Rolex Daytona 116506, also known as the “Platona”, is the undisputed king of the Daytona family. I love the sparkle of the platinum case, not that different from the ornaments on my Christmas tree. I mean, I could go on and put on my Santa wishlist that I want the base Daytona “Panda”, but since we’re here, I might as well test my luck.
Patek Philippe Chronograph 5170R
Breguet figures, check, Manufacture hand-wound movement, check. Black aesthetic on rose gold, check. One of the finest hand-wound chronographs in the world, check and verify. It is the quintessence of fine watchmaking low-fillers if there ever was one. Would be as good on my wrist as it would on my Christmas tree. Santa, I know you are listening …
Rolex Day-Date 228235
Last but not least is the El Presidente, also known as the Rolex Day-Date. Available in almost any metal you could want, the Day-Date quickly became a brand-defining watch, and it’s a watch I’ve watched for a very long time. This particular model has the not-so-common white gold case paired with a green dial, but if you’re looking for something a little more hardcore, then then this solid Everose gold beast might do the trick.
