Fratello × Oris Big Crown Bronze Pointer Date
Robert-Jan: “It is with great pride that we present the Fratello × Oris Big Crown Bronze Pointer Date. This adventure of creating a watch with Oris was a great experience from start to finish. Michael Stockton’s idea of creating a bronze watch with a red dial was readily accepted by Oris. A visit to Hölstein gave us additional inspiration for the dial, for example. In its neat little museum, Oris has a number of vintage watches. One of them had “Anti-Shock” on the dial, which we thought was a nice touch as opposed to the usual “Automatic” wording.
For this Fratello × Oris Big Crown Bronze Pointer date, we decided to use the gold print for the dates, minute track and text. It blends wonderfully with the warm tones of the bronze case. The great crown model as such was also not discussed. This model has been part of the Oris collection since 1983 and we consider it a classic. After working so intensely with Oris last year, my appreciation for the brand has only increased. Great people, and just like the Dutch, very down to earth.
I am incredibly happy with the result of our hard work and proud to wear the # 13/300 (because it is my favorite number) of the watch. Number 1 went to Michael Stockton, who came up with the idea for the oxblood dial.
Designing watches is a nuanced quest. Part of the fun and difficulty in finding something new is in the rules you have to adhere to. Watches are functional objects. In addition, they are clever objects, created to inspire as much as to inform. While creating a readable watch is of paramount importance, so too is ensuring that the watch has emotional resonance. To achieve this, the designer must be aware of what has happened before and how this can contribute to a successful design.
Context is everything. Watches live and die thanks to their ability to capture the imagination of the wearer. This can be achieved through the harmonious presentation of information as well as a fusion of colors and shapes that draw the gaze back to the watch over and over again.
For that Oris × Fratello collaboration, we chose the Big Crown Pointer Date as our starting point. Rather than just choosing a model from the catalog, the decision came through an organic process. The man behind this business? Our own Mike Stockton. This model was born from her imagination, piqued while she was in search of novelty at Baselworld 2019 …
Love at first sight
Mike doesn’t need too much persuasion to buy a new watch at the best of times. When Oris presented its new Big Pointer Date with a red Oxblood dial, it was love at first sight. Except that the course of true love seldom runs smoothly, and as taken as Mike was by the proportions, layout and color of the watch face, an idea began to germinate in his mind …
He couldn’t help but wonder what this new dial would look like, housed in the 40mm bronze case created exclusively for Oris’s 80th anniversary the year before. The only problem with this watch in Mike’s mind? The 80th anniversary edition featured a green dial. As complementary as Mike thought the red Oxblood dial would be in the bronze case, such a configuration was nowhere in the brand’s lineup.
And so he did what all good watch journalists should do and asked the question: “Would it be possible to slip one of those glorious red Oxblood dials into the bronze case from the previous year?” And guess what? Oris said yes! Good type of …
“Our Dutch contact was clearly willing to help find an Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th Anniversary, although he did mention that the demand was and is so hot for these that it would take two months to get one. As for the dial, a spare could be sent, but the brand was unwilling to offer a truly unique piece for a host of different (and totally understandable) reasons.
“The handsets of the steel and bronze models differ (ie the hands are surrounded by white metal on the steel version), but the dials do not contain any trace of metal. Therefore, it was purely an exchange of dials. I had the watch shipped to our favorite watchmaker Paul, who took care of the grafting of the red dial. The result, IMHO, seems epic.
“Oris, in my opinion, ranks among the most talented in the industry when it comes to choosing color tones for its watches. Whether it’s this light blue and yellow Divers Sixty-Five, the slate green dial found on the 36mm pointer dates or the vibrant hues found on the Aquis diver with the sun dial. , Oris has a real talent for being “to the point” with his palette. I just wanted something different and as the bronze watch case developed a patina in just a few weeks I became more and more enamored. But this watch is not limited to color. After all, a dial change can improve a watch, but it’s unlikely to transform a mediocre platform.
“The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is fantastic and versatile. With its luminescent hands, its large screw-down crown, its screwed caseback, its water resistance of 50 meters and its domed sapphire crystal, it is a surprisingly resistant watch, which goes everywhere and does everything. And it has a red dial. I never tire of looking at it.
Color takes center stage
The absence of a date window gives this model a pleasantly balanced appearance. As such, color takes center stage. Large cathedral hands with bright lights add a touch of retro elegance to the proceedings. They gaze home next to the warm-hued bronze case and against the rich red dial. To further integrate the dial into the case, we replaced the crisper white minute track with an “old gold” minute track. As a result, the dial feels even more in tune with its surroundings.
